Introduction
As we enter a new century, Missouri is already an international center of plant and human genome research, biotechnology, healthcare advances, agricultural development, and related global business and research allliances -- all supported by sophisticated transportation and information technology infrastructure, world-class research universities, an emergent venture capital sector, and a highly trained workforce. Traditionally America's gateway to the west, Missouri is now emerging as the world's life science gateway.
Missouri is home to more than 300 life science firms, and these companies account for 170,000 direct jobs and indirectly support another 260,000 jobs. Overall, the life sciences contributed US$23 billion to Missouri's economy, or 13.5 percent of the gross state product (as of 2001), and are a major investment and development focus for our state.
Missouri is located at the center of the world's most fertile cropland, the region which generates 75 percent of American farm production. A century ago, visionaries established one of the nation's first medical school and constitutionally committed at least 25 percent of total state revenues to education, ensuring that a skilled population would work with leading-edge ideas into the future.
Despite Missouri begin a world leader in terms of both life science and biotech resources and people, many Japanese professionals working in the life sciences may still be unfamiliar with all that Missouri has to offer. Therefore, we have set up the new Life Science Incubation Center to help you get to know more about all of the great Missouri life science assets available to you. The Missouri life sciences community is eager to expand our relations with the Japanese life sciences community today.
